Core-shell Emulsion Polymerization

Jun 28, 2023

Core shell lotion polymerization refers to the combination of silicone monomer and acrylate monomer in stages under certain conditions. According to the different components of the seed lotion, composite lotion with polysiloxane as shell and polyacrylate as shell can be prepared respectively. Different core-shell compositions endow lotion with different properties. Since the interfacial tension between siloxane and water is greater than that between polysiloxane and water, most organosilicon acrylate shell/core lotion are based on acrylate as the shell and polysiloxane as the core. The seed lotion method and multi-step seed lotion method are used for the preparation of organosilicon acrylate core-shell lotion. By adding monomers and emulsifiers according to certain procedures, the distribution of latex particle size and the ratio of soft and hard monomers can be effectively controlled, and the silicone acrylic resin with multilayer structure particles and different properties can be prepared. The organosilicon composite lotion with core/shell structure has better anti backtack, film-forming, stability, adhesion and mechanical properties.

Core shell lotion polymerization is a new lotion polymerization technology developed in the early 1970s based on the concept of "particle design". In fact, it is the development of seed lotion. In seed lotion polymerization, the same monomer is used for the preparation of seed latex and subsequent formal polymerization, resulting in only growing particles. The core-shell lotion polymerization is to use another monomer to form a graft layer between the core and the shell during the subsequent formal polymerization, thus increasing the compatibility of the two. The biggest difference between lotion obtained by core-shell lotion polymerization and lotion obtained by conventional lotion polymerization is that the core-shell lotion has low film forming temperature and good backtack resistance. In addition, due to the possible grafting, interpenetration, or ion bonding between the core and shell layers, the wear resistance, water resistance, tensile strength, and adhesive strength of the polymer can be significantly improved. Therefore, core-shell lotion polymerization has been widely used in the modification of silicone acrylate in recent years.

It was found that the organosilicon modified acrylic core-shell lotion had good film forming property and low water absorption, which improved the defects of low temperature brittleness and high temperature backtack of the film, improved the water resistance and mechanical properties, and reduced the content of residual monomer in the lotion. Using silicone modified acrylic core shell lotion as printing Adhesive, the fabric has a good hand feel, and the film forming property and color fastness of the printed fabric are improved.

After the preparation of PD4-P (St MMA-AA) core-shell structure particles, the core-shell structure nano porous latex particles of silicone modified styrene acrylic lotion were synthesized by acid-base treatment. Preliminary speculation has been made on the pore formation mechanism, and it is proposed that the formation and size of pores are closely related to the content of steric groups on the particle surface. The polymerization mechanism and product morphology of silicon acrylic seed lotion polymerization were investigated in detail. Liu Xiang et al. synthesized a microphase composite polymer lotion with a "hard core" and a "soft shell" structure by seed lotion polymerization with methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, acrylic acid 2-ethylhexyl ester, etc. as monomers and persulfuric acid as initiator. Transmission electron microscopy observation confirmed the morphological characteristics of this latex particle, characterizing a glass transition temperature of 13 At 6 ° C, the tensile strength and water resistance of the film were significantly improved compared with the conventional lotion polymer.
